Voice, mystery and the magical interpretation of sounds heard from the balcony and from the street are at the core of "La Santa Monica", an ancient ritual of divination in Puglia in southern Italy, practised by Alessandra Eramo's great-grandmother. A dog's barking, the whistle of a distant train, the cry of an owl, the voice of people walking down the street, all sounds heard are signs revealing a destiny. Activating the memory of this archaic practice of invocation and interpretation of the reality, Eramo's sound performance aims to create a profound collective listening experience through the use of voice, field recordings, electronics, text, drawing and sea salt. In the Live-Performance, the salt, a rough-sounding purifying element, is transformed into a sound object, evoking the sound of sea water as a distant memory.

The recordings she realized during her residency in Castrignano De' Greci form together a new soundscape in a collage of hypnotic noises: primarily the recordings of ubiquitous birds chants, which is a sign of nature's reconquest of the village, as with many villages in southern Italy that are in real danger of becoming human deserts or mere entertainment spots for tourists, due to the mass migration of the local population in recent decades. And the recordings of women's stories about the birds, and Eramo's singing, The voice becomes a space between the public and the private, between the inside and the outside. The body is exposed in a ritual "on the threshold", in stasis and in movement, creating a circular itinerary surrounded by her drawings which serve as transcriptions and graphic scores of the sounds she has recorded and listened to.

La voce, il mistero e l'interpretazione magica dei suoni ascoltati dal balcone e dalla strada sono al centro de "La Santa Monica", un antico rituale di divinazione pugliese praticato dalla bisnonna di Alessandra Eramo. L'abbaiare di un cane, il fischio di un treno lontano, lo squittìo della civetta, il vociare delle persone che camminano per strada: tutti i suoni uditi sono segni che rivelano un destino. Attivando la memoria di questa pratica divinatoria arcaica di invocazione e interpretazione della realtà, la performance sonora di Eramo mira a creare una profonda esperienza di ascolto collettivo assieme al pubblico attraverso l'uso di voce, field recordings, testo, disegno, sale marino.

Nella performance il sale, elemento purificatore dal suono ruvido, viene trasformato in oggetto sonoro, evocando il suono dell'acqua di mare, come un ricordo lontano. Le registrazioni da lei effettuate durante la sua residenza a Castrignano De' Greci formano insieme un nuovo paesaggio sonoro in un collage di rumori ipnotici: principalmente le registrazioni del canto onnipresente degli uccelli, che è un segno della riconquista del villaggio da parte della natura, come per molti villaggi del sud Italia che stanno rischiando concretamente di diventare deserti umani, o meri luoghi di divertimento per turisti, a causa della migrazione di massa della popolazione locale negli ultimi decenni. E le registrazioni dei racconti di alcune donne su questi uccelli, così come il canto della stessa Eramo.

La voce diventa spazio tra pubblico e privato, tra l'interno e l'esterno. Il corpo si espone in un rituale "sulla soglia", in stasi e in movimento, crea un percorso circolare attorniato dai suoi disegni che funzionano come trascrizioni e partiture grafiche dei suoni registrati e ascoltati.

Con quest'opera di performance, Alessandra Eramo porta avanti la sua attuale ricerca sulle tematiche del corpo e del margine, della voce e l'esperienza di ascolto tra interno ed esterno.
